OFFICIAL: Thai Player Ascends to World Number One in Badminton

Thai badminton currently possesses many players at the world's premier tier.

Thai player Kunlavut Vitidsarn will reclaim the world number one spot in men's singles badminton in the rankings updated by the BWF (Badminton World Federation) on the upcoming March 10.

Based on precise calculations from the specialist site Statminton, Kunlavut rises one rank from position number 2 to number 1 worldwide with accumulated points of 100,779, an increase of 700 points compared to last week. Such a minor shift is sufficient to help the Thai player return to the throne, as Shi Yuqi was deducted up to 7,680 points and now only has 100,567 points, trailing Kunlavut by 212 points.

The reason Shi Yuqi lost many points on the world rankings is due to his poor performance at the Super 1000 All England Open - where Shi was the tournament champion in 2025. Right in his opening match, the Chinese player lost to Lakhsya Sen (India) after three games, thus failing to defend the massive points from the previous season.

Meanwhile, Kunlavut Vitidsarn reached the semifinals of the All England badminton tournament (lost to Lin Chun-yi, who later became the champion), improving his result compared to the 2025 season (eliminated in round 2), thereby gaining an additional 700 points to surpass Shi Yuqi on the rankings.

This is the second time Kunlavut has climbed to the top of the world men's singles badminton rankings. Previously, He once held the summit after winning the Singapore Open last June, but was soon "deposed" by Shi.

In other developments within the current top 10 men's singles badminton, Chou Tien-chen rises to position 6, pushing Li Shifeng down to 7. Lin Chun-yi, with this year's All England Open title, climbs to rank 8 - the best career ranking, inadvertently pushing Loh Kean Yew out of the top 10.

Meanwhile, in women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles categories, the top spots remain unchanged, respectively belonging to: An Se-young (South Korea), Kim Won-ho/Seo Seung-jae (South Korea), Liu Shengshu/Tan Ning (China), and Feng Yanzhe/Huang Dongping (China).
