Yankees captain Aaron Judge set an American League record with 36 intentional walks in a single season.

During the ninth inning of the Yankees-White Sox matchup, the White Sox bench showed a four-finger sign to intentionally walk Aaron Judge, giving the Yankees captain his second intentional walk of the game.

Although this decision drew boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd, it set up José Caballero's walk-off hit, helping the Yankees win 3-2 and secure their eighth playoff spot in the past nine years.

While this intentional walk was not the highlight amid the ensuing celebrations, it marked a historic moment for Judge—during the final game of the series against the White Sox today, Chicago pitcher Davis Martin issued him an intentional walk in the second inning, bringing his total to 35 this season.

According to STATS, this number surpassed the American League single-season record of 34 (sometimes recorded as 33) set by Ted Williams in 1957. Since intentional walks have been officially tracked starting in 1955, no AL player has reached such a total. In the sixth inning, White Sox bullpen pitcher Tyler Gilbert intentionally walked Judge again, raising his season total to 36.

In Major League history, Barry Bonds set the still-standing single-season record of 120 intentional walks in 2004, breaking his own previous record of 68 set in 2002.

Judge’s 36 intentional walks are the most in a single MLB season since 2010, when Albert Pujols of the Cardinals had 38 and Adrian González of the Padres had 35.

The previous Yankees single-season record was held by Mickey Mantle, who received 23 intentional walks in 1957. Judge broke this record back in July. So far, he has accumulated 104 intentional walks in his career, ranking third in Yankees history behind Don Mattingly (136) and Mantle (126).
