After the New York Mets were eliminated, "Polar Bear" Alonso was eager to announce his opt-out from the contract.

The New York Mets suffered a 0-4 shutout loss away to the Miami Marlins today, dropping two of the three key series games and confirming they will not advance to the postseason. After the game, star first baseman "Polar Bear" Alonso promptly announced he would opt out of his deal with the Mets.

After gaining free agent status last year, Alonso did not receive an offer he found satisfactory on the market, ultimately choosing to return to his former team, the Mets, signing a two-year guaranteed contract worth $54 million, with a player option for $24 million in the second year.

Typically, players sign such contracts to prove their worth for another year before opting out to enter free agency. Although the deadline to decide on the player option usually comes after the World Series, Alonso confirmed to reporters after today’s game that he would be exercising his opt-out clause.

Alonso emphasized that this does not mean he does not want to stay with the Mets: "I enjoy playing here, there are many great teammates and coaches, and I truly love it here. I am grateful every day. Nothing is guaranteed, but we will see what happens. I like being a Met and hope they feel the same about me."

Turning 31 in December, Alonso posted a .273 batting average this season, a personal best, with a .348 on-base percentage and a .526 slugging percentage, his second-highest career mark. His wRC+ ranked eighth in the entire league, tied for his career second-highest at 141. He hit 38 home runs, second-most on the team, and tied for the most doubles in the National League with 41.
