The MLB regular season wrapped up on the 28th, and by the 29th, three teams decided to change their managers for the new season. Both the San Francisco Giants and Minnesota Twins fired their managers, and Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers announced his resignation.
The Twins fired manager Rocco Baldelli, ending his seven-year tenure. Baldelli took over in 2019, leading the team to three American League Central titles and winning AL Manager of the Year in his first season. He also ended the Twins’ 18-game playoff losing streak in 2023, securing their first postseason win since 2002. However, the team struggled over the last two years, finishing this season with a 70-92 record.
Originally seen as strong contenders for the division title, the Twins’ performance sharply declined after June. The front office made major changes before the trade deadline, trading away 10 players and cutting $26 million in payroll. After the All-Star break, the team went 23-43, finishing fourth in their division and fourth from the bottom in the entire league—their worst record since 2016.
For the Giants, despite exercising manager Bob Melvin’s contract option through 2026 in July, they still parted ways with him. The Giants finished the season 81-81, showing inconsistency. They had a strong run from late August to early September with a 13-3 record, briefly raising playoff hopes, but then slumped to just 2-9 from September 13 to 23, ultimately missing the postseason entirely.
Since winning the NL West in 2021 with 107 wins over the Dodgers’ 106, the Giants have not made the playoffs and have failed to maintain a winning record. Melvin will turn 64 in October and has coached in the majors for 22 seasons. He returned to the Bay Area in 2023 to lead the Giants, a team he had long dreamed of managing; he was also the Giants’ catcher from 1986 to 1988 during his playing career.
Unlike the other two who were dismissed, Rangers’ Bochy chose to step down, ending his three-year tenure. He led the team to its first-ever World Series title in 2023 but missed the playoffs the following two years. The Rangers announced a mutual agreement to part ways with Bochy and have offered him an advisory role to remain with the organization in a staff capacity.
Bochy, now 70 years old, is the active MLB manager with the most wins, holding a record of 2,252 wins and 2,266 losses, ranking sixth all-time in wins, with the top five all inducted into the Hall of Fame. After finishing his last season with the Giants in 2019, he took a three-year break before returning to coaching. During his 13 years managing the Giants, he won three titles from 2010 to 2014; prior to that, he managed the Padres for 12 years and led them to one National League championship.
