The Texas Rangers quickly finalized their new head coach, appointing former National League Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker to lead the team.

The Texas Rangers moved quickly to secure their new head coach. The team revealed today that they have inked a four-year deal with former Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. Schumaker, who is presently a senior advisor with the Rangers, was praised by baseball operations president Chris Young in a statement: “We are very excited to make this announcement and have Skip lead the team. During his advisory role, he has demonstrated tremendous passion, focus, and a strong desire to win. We are fortunate to have him.”

At 45 years old, Skip Schumaker coached the Marlins for two seasons, leading the team to an 84-78 record in 2023, earning a playoff berth and being named National League Manager of the Year. However, the Marlins declined to 62-100 in 2024, and after the season, he departed and subsequently joined the Rangers as an advisor.

Chris Young clearly outlined the Rangers’ new strategy during the press conference—reducing payroll and developing young talent: “Next year, we will have a younger team while continuing to cultivate players at the major league level. This was a significant factor in our choice of the new manager.”

The Rangers won the World Series in 2023 but missed the playoffs in the following two seasons. The team plans to rebuild its competitiveness over several years, with Schumaker’s primary role being to lead and develop the next generation of players. Although his managerial experience is limited, he has ample expertise in competition and nurturing rookies. Last year, when the Marlins faced an injury crisis, he utilized as many as 70 players, setting a major league record.

Notably, Schumaker’s son, Brody Schumaker, is also a baseball player. In September, he was selected for the U18 USA national team and hit 5-for-11 in five games at the World Cup, helping the team secure the championship.
