The Yankees' pitching staff couldn't contain the Blue Jays' heavy hitters, as Toronto secured a convincing series-opening victory at home.

The MLB postseason has advanced to the Division Series round, where the New York Yankees face the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League. The Blue Jays' offense initially overwhelmed the Yankees' starting pitcher, then dismantled the relief pitchers, finishing with a commanding 10-1 victory at home to earn the first win of the series.

Toronto’s top star, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., launched a solo home run off Yankees starter Luis Gil in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Blue Jays an early lead. In the second inning, Alejandro Kirk hit an even longer solo homer, extending Toronto’s advantage to 2-0.

The Yankees had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning, but managed to score only one run thanks to a walk drawn by Cody Bellinger, missing a chance to widen their lead.

The Blue Jays surged again in the bottom of the seventh. After the Yankees brought in Luke Weaver, they issued a walk and then allowed two consecutive hits to score runs. An emergency pitching change brought in Fernando Cruz, who got some outs but also issued a walk. Nathan Lukes hit a high-breaking ball for a double, driving in two runs, followed by a sacrifice fly from Guerrero, pushing the score to 6-1 in favor of Toronto.

Toronto kept their offense blazing in the bottom of the eighth, with Kirk hitting another solo home run. Consecutive hits brought in more runs, and Ernie Clement’s sacrifice fly along with Lukes’ hit added to the tally, ultimately expanding the lead to 10-1.

In the top of the ninth, the Blue Jays sent in closer Jeff Hoffman to finish the game. He struck out two batters in a row, and although José Caballero reached second base midway through, Hoffman sealed the win by striking out Anthony Volpe.

The Blue Jays defeated the Yankees 10-1 to take the first game in the best-of-five series.
