The Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen has frequently faltered this season, causing fans to watch the late innings nervously. However, in the playoffs, they’ve found new hope in the revitalized Japanese ace Roki Sasaki, who was converted to a reliever. Now, when his entrance song "Bailalo Rocky" plays, it almost signals the game’s imminent conclusion.
Though "Bailalo Rocky" consists of only four words repeated continuously, it is highly energizing. It accompanies Roki Sasaki as he takes the mound, ready to close out the game. Not long ago, the ninth inning was still a nerve-wracking moment for Dodgers fans; in the last seven regular-season losses, four were due to blown leads and three were caused by bullpen collapses late in the game.
Roki Sasaki has changed that situation. During the playoffs, he has recorded three saves and allowed just one run over eight innings pitched. Now, when "Bailalo Rocky" echoes through the stadium, fans feel anticipation instead of anxiety.
"Actually, it was Miguel Rojas’ idea, and I’m really glad the fans like it," Sasaki said in a recent interview. Rojas is the teammate who voluntarily gave up his No. 11 jersey to Sasaki during spring training (now wearing No. 72) and recommended this song to him back in February.
"I didn’t pitch well at Dodger Stadium before, so honestly, I didn’t have very good memories there," Sasaki admitted. "But now that I’ve succeeded as a reliever, the view from the mound is completely different."
Assigning Roki Sasaki as the closer might be a temporary solution for the team, but his impact has been profound despite his short time as a reliever. Rojas even hopes to see more in-stadium effects related to "Bailalo Rocky": "I think we should prepare a video for him, dim the lights, and add some special effects. I believe that’s the atmosphere he needs next."
