Former Oriole pitcher Brian Matusz passed away last week probably due to a drug overdose

According to a Phoenix police report obtained by The Baltimore Banner, former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz died last week after an apparent drug overdose.

The police report noted that Brian Matusz's mother found him on January 6 (U.S. time) when she visited his home, 37-year-old Brian Matusz lying on his back on a couch with a white substance in his mouth and aluminum foil, a lighter and a straw on the floor at hand.

In police reports, there were no obvious signs of injury, trauma or murder, but Brian Matusz's body was taken to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner as part of the death investigation.

Brian Matusz, the No. 4 rookie in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, spent almost his entire eight-year career with the Orioles, playing in 279 games for Baltimore, including 68 starts.

He eventually became a relay pitcher and became known for his success against Hall of Famer David Ortiz, who hit just 4 hits (batting average 1-for-38) against Brian Matusz 29 in his career, and had 13 strikeouts by him.

Brian Matusz represented the Orioles in the 2012 and 2014 playoffs, was traded to the Atlanta Warriors in May 2016 and released a week later, and then signed with the Chicago Cubs, pitching in the Cubs minor leagues except for a three-inning start in the major leagues on July 31, 2016, and his pitching career ended in 2019.
