Come back next year! Former American League Cy Young winner Bieber chooses to exercise player option to stay with the Blue Jays

Following the Toronto Blue Jays’ heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the World Series after being overtaken by the Dodgers, the team has made its initial offseason roster decision. Shane Bieber, the pitcher who surrendered the go-ahead home run to Will Smith during extra innings, opted to activate his player option and will continue with Toronto next season.

Bieber earned the AL Cy Young Award in 2020 but only pitched twice last year due to injury. After being traded from the Cleveland Guardians to the Blue Jays this season, he returned to the mound, starting 7 games, pitching 40.1 innings with 37 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.57. During the playoffs, he started 4 games with a 3.86 ERA, and appeared in relief in Game 7 of the World Series, where in the 11th inning of extra innings, Smith hit the decisive solo home run. Ultimately, the Blue Jays lost by that single run.

After the game, Bieber said: "This team possesses many indescribable qualities, showing resilience and strong team spirit. Everyone fights for each other, which reflects the unity in the clubhouse rather than just individual talent."

Previously, many expected Bieber to decline his contract and enter free agency to seek a bigger deal. However, according to the latest report from MLB’s official website, Bieber has chosen to exercise his $16 million player option for next season and will stay with Toronto.

This year, the Blue Jays have six key players with expiring contracts, including star infielder Bo Bichette, three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, 36-year-old starting pitcher Chris Bassitt, reliever Seranthony Domínguez, versatile player Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and first baseman Ty France.

Bichette hit a three-run home run off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7 of the World Series, and recent reports indicate the Dodgers are interested in acquiring him. Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro emphasized the team’s commitment to retaining this core player: "We fully understand the unique significance Toronto holds for our players, and the support from fans across the country makes the Blue Jays a true representation of Canada."
