Throughout the winter meetings, the Yankees highlighted the importance of strengthening their lineup against left-handed pitching, and they fulfilled this by bringing back utility player Amed Rosario on a one-year contract.
According to MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand, Rosario is set to earn $2.5 million in the upcoming season. This agreement, yet to be officially confirmed by the team, was first reported by YES Network.
Now 30 years old, Rosario was traded from the Washington Nationals to the Yankees on July 26 last year in exchange for right-hander Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez. He appeared in 16 games for the Yankees, posting a .303 batting average (10 hits in 33 at-bats), including 3 doubles and 1 home run, while driving in 5 runs.
Combining his stats from both the Nationals and the Yankees, Rosario played 63 games with a slash line of .276/.309/.436 (50 hits in 181 at-bats), hitting 6 home runs and driving in 23 runs, with a .302 average against left-handed pitchers (35 hits in 116 at-bats). Defensively, he has experience at third base, second base, right field, and shortstop.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman reiterated his desire for a more balanced right-handed lineup as he prepared to leave the winter meetings in Orlando, Florida.
“I definitely want to provide (Manager) Aaron Boone with some dependable options to tailor our lineup when facing left-handed starters because clearly, we have too many left-handed hitters right now, which is a weakness,” Cashman said. “There aren’t many right-handed hitters available at the moment.”
Aside from selecting right-hander Cade Winquest from the St. Louis Cardinals in Thursday’s Rule 5 Draft, the Yankees’ only major league level additions this offseason have been players who were already part of their 2025 roster.
Rosario joins left-hander Tim Hill, outfielder Trent Grisham, and lefty Ryan Yarbrough in this group. Utility player Oswaldo Cabrera and right-hander Clarke Schmidt have also agreed to new contracts to avoid salary arbitration.
Prior to this, earlier in the week, the team reportedly signed two minor league deals with spring training invitations for right-handers Drake Fellows and Bradley Hanner.
