A source in Houston told MLB staff that the Astros are finalizing a deal to send pitcher Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs after the veteran agreed to waive his non-tradable clause on Sunday.

The club has yet to confirm the deal and will need to wait for Pressly's medical approval.

Pressly has one year and $14 million remaining on his current contract, and ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Astros will provide some money to the Cubs to help pay his 2025 salary. The trade gives the Astros some flexibility to the roster and can add another player. Houston general manager Brown said Saturday that the club does not rule out re-signing free agent third baseman Alex Bugman.

Presley, 36, joined the Astros midway through the 2018 season and began his role as the team's finisher in 2020, scoring 111 rescues for Houston. A two-time All-Star in 2019 and 2021, he had his first 14 rescue successes in the playoffs of his Astros career ahead of last year's playoffs, including Game 6 of the 2022 World Series.

In Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series last year, which he lost to the Tigers in Houston, Presley dropped 3 points in 0.2 innings, knocked out 2 hits and 1 four-bad shot to save construction in the playoffs for the first time in his career. He had a pitch defense rate of 1.08 and hedged out 60 strikeouts in 47 playoff games.

Last year, Pressly played in 59 games for Houston, and when in his setup role, he had a defense rate of 3.49 and a base-on-base rate of 1.34 per inning, with an ERA+ of 114. According to Baseball Savant, his curveball spins at 3258 rpm, which ranks among the top Major League Baseball pitchers.
