The MLB Players Association Executive Committee unanimously approved Bruce Meyer as interim executive director today. A day before, Tony Clark stepped down after serving as the union leader for over ten years.
The executive committee is made up of 72 major and minor league players who are elected by their teammates to serve two-year terms.
Meyer joined the MLB Players Association in 2018 as senior director of collective bargaining and legal affairs, and was promoted to deputy executive director in 2022. He led the union's negotiation team for the 2022 major league basic agreement, the 2020 agreement, and the 2023 minor league player basic agreement.
Before joining the MLB Players Association, Meyer was a senior advisor for the NHL Players Association and a partner at Wilkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. Meyer will continue to serve as the union’s chief negotiator for the next basic agreement, which expires this December.
Matt Nussbaum, the former chief legal counsel for the MLB Players Association, was also unanimously elected to succeed Meyer as deputy executive director. Nussbaum has been with the union since 2011.
Clark resigned two days ago, but the executive committee did not hold the vote to elect his successor until today.
