Dodgers’ new addition Tucker appointed as “Shohei Ohtani’s bodyguard,” Betts moves down to third spot

Following the “Cosmic Dodgers” significant offseason reinforcements, the lineup is set for revision in the upcoming season. Shohei Ohtani continues as the first batter, with new teammate Kyle Tucker assigned to the second spot to shield him. Mookie Betts, whose performance dipped last year, shifts to the third position, and Freddie Freeman fills the fourth spot.

Last year, Shohei Ohtani consistently hit leadoff for the Dodgers, sacrificing some RBI chances, hitting 55 home runs but only driving in 102 runs. In contrast, Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber rotated within the top four spots, blasting 56 homers and collecting 132 RBIs, earning the National League RBI title.

As the second hitter, Betts failed to adequately protect Ohtani, with his offensive index plunging to 0.732 last season, a career low. Since joining the majors, this metric had never dropped below 0.800. Typically, powerful hitters without strong protection behind them see more walks and strikeouts because opposing pitchers can pitch more cautiously. Ohtani led the National League with 20 intentional walks last season.

Outside expectations are that Betts will rebound this year. Manager Dave Roberts stated, “I have no doubt. Considering his performance at shortstop last year, we anticipate his offensive production will improve, and he will definitely be a strong MVP contender this season.”

The following batting spots are expected to be filled by Will Smith, the returning Max Muncy, Teoscar Hernández, Andy Pages, and Tommy Edman.
