It is confirmed that Lindor will not become the team captain; he responded to the Mets by saying he respects the management's decision.

Francisco Lindor, the star shortstop, will not get the opportunity to serve as the Mets’ captain unless someone richer buys the team from Steve Cohen. Lindor has shown respect for Cohen’s announcement that the team will not designate a captain.

Lindor responded, “I respect this decision; it’s definitely one made by Steve and the upper management. Whether or not I’m named captain won’t change how I perform. I’m glad he clarified everything so we can stop talking about it and move forward.”

“This isn’t the direction they want to take, and I respect their choice; I understand and support it. Right now, I need to focus on baseball. I believe there are already leaders on our team; the clubhouse is the clubhouse. Let’s just play well and concentrate on winning.”

If the Mets were to choose a captain, Lindor would be a strong candidate. He has a long-term contract with no-trade and no-escape clauses, unlike Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, or Jeff McNeil, who might be traded mid-contract.

This winter, the Mets cleared out several veterans, leading some fans to say they barely recognize the team anymore. Meanwhile, the neighboring New York Yankees, after nine years without a captain, named Aaron Judge as their new captain in 2023; Judge will also captain the U.S. team in next month’s Classic.
