The ABS ball-strike challenge system underwent its trial run on the first day of spring training, achieving a success rate close to 60%.

The ABS automated ball-strike challenge system will make its official entrance into MLB this season. It was deployed today during the opening spring training games of the 2026 season.

In five spring training games across the Cactus League and Grapefruit League, a total of 23 challenges occurred, averaging 4.6 per game. Among them, 13 calls were reversed, yielding a success rate of 56.5%.

The matchup between the Diamondbacks and Rockies featured the most intense challenge activity, with the two teams combining for seven challenges, six of which were successful. The Diamondbacks led with five challenges and four successful ones, making them the team with the highest number of attempts and successes that day, while the Rockies succeeded in both of their two challenges.

Among the ten teams that played that day, the Orioles were the only team that did not initiate any challenges. The Orioles, Mariners, and Royals were the only three teams whose challenges were all unsuccessful.

Tomorrow’s spring training games will feature a full schedule, and it is expected that even more ABS challenges will take place.
