In the Orioles’ spring training opener versus the Yankees today, new addition “Polar Bear” Pete Alonso launched a home run in his debut game after switching teams, guiding the squad to a 2-0 shutout win. However, the Yankees’ lineup did not feature their three MVPs: Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger, who all sat out.
Alonso left the New York Mets after seven years during the offseason and joined the Orioles as the highest-paid first baseman in league history. On the 21st, in Baltimore’s first major league spring training game this year, Alonso batted second in the lineup. Despite grounding out and flying out in his first two at-bats, he connected on the first curveball he saw in his third at-bat in the sixth inning, sending a powerful home run over the left-field fence, marking his first homer as an Oriole.
The Orioles ultimately defeated the Yankees thanks to Alonso’s two-run homer. However, since Judge, Stanton, and Bellinger did not play for the Yankees, more than half of their starting lineup were not regular starters. It is expected that in the game on the 22nd against the Detroit Tigers at home, the three MVPs will be back together. Judge is confirmed to play right field tomorrow and will serve as designated hitter the following day.
