The Dodgers acquired outfielder Jack Suwinski from the Pirates' waiver list today to bolster their outfield depth. To make room on the 40-man roster, utility man Kiké Hernández was placed on the 60-day injured list.
At 27 years old, Suwinski has no minor league options left, meaning he must either make the Dodgers' Opening Day roster or face being waived again. Since he can play center field, he may genuinely have a chance to be included on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster.
Suwinski has spent all four of his major league seasons with the Pirates, compiling a slash line of .199/.305/.389. He possesses power potential as a left-handed hitter, having hit 26 home runs in 144 games in 2023. However, he has not matched that power since and was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday.
With utility player Tommy Edman expected to start the season on the injured list, the Dodgers lack depth behind starting center fielder Andy Pages. The team had considered rotating Hyeseong Kim in center field, but he has primarily played infield during his career. Defensive specialist Michael Siani is also on the 40-man roster, but his hitting has yet to translate at the major league level.
This spring training presents Suwinski with an opportunity to earn a roster spot; he has more defensive innings (1529.2) in center field than in the corners, where he is also experienced. If he can demonstrate the offensive power he showed earlier in his career during spring games, he stands a chance to secure a place on the major league team.
Hernández, who is recovering from offseason surgery on his left elbow, being placed on the 60-day injured list is not surprising. The Dodgers have not specified his return timeline, but Hernández mentioned on a podcast that he expects to miss the first two months of the regular season.
