The World Baseball Classic will start in March, yet the Japan team aiming to defend their title has encountered further injury troubles before the competition. Yuki Matsui, a left-handed bullpen pitcher for the San Diego Padres, has formally requested to withdraw from the national squad because of a left groin strain, ensuring he won't participate in this Classic.
Matsui was initially seen as a vital part of Japan's bullpen strength, but he felt sudden discomfort after throwing just 21 pitches during spring training in the United States, forcing him to exit early. He admitted that continuing to pitch might worsen his injury, so he stopped training and underwent further examinations. After evaluation, Matsui concluded he could not fully recover before the Classic started and ultimately decided to withdraw.
This marks the third bullpen player lost for Japan. Previously, Kaima Taira and Daichi Ishii had already withdrawn due to injuries, with Shoma Fujihira and Chihiro Sumida called up as their replacements. According to Japanese media reports, young left-hander Yumeto Kanamaru from the Chunichi Dragons is expected to be the next potential substitute.
Under the leadership of head coach Hirokazu Ibata, Japan is striving to achieve consecutive championships. Yuki Matsui participated in the 2017 and 2023 Classics, and if he had played this year, he would have been the only veteran with three appearances. He was highly anticipated to lead the young relief pitchers with his extensive experience. His injury withdrawal is undoubtedly a heavy blow to Japan's pitching strategy.
