Pete Alonso, after putting on the Baltimore Orioles jersey, has recorded a home run in each game.
Even though these are only two spring training Grapefruit League warm-up matches, Alonso’s debut with the Orioles has been extremely impressive. Following his home run in the spring opener against the New York Yankees the day before yesterday, the 31-year-old first baseman blasted another homer today at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida, against the Detroit Tigers, with the game ending in a 4-4 tie.
Last December 11, Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles, seamlessly integrating into the team’s lineup and clubhouse. The "Polar Bear" has already shown leadership qualities, and now he’s proving with his power why he was one of the most sought-after players on the free-agent market.
Alonso’s first homer for the Orioles came two days ago—a deep two-run shot to left field. His second homer, a solo blast in the third inning off left-hander Konnor Pilkington, flew down the left-center field line, which is even more impressive considering the wind was blowing toward right field at the time.
Alonso lives nearby in Tampa and is willing to play road games during spring training because many of the Orioles’ visiting stadiums are close to his home. Additionally, he enjoys accumulating many spring training at-bats before the season opener.
“I like to be ready for the season,” Alonso recently said. “I think facing different pitchers is a good thing.”
This pace might be hard to maintain, but Alonso is likely to smash many home runs from the heart of the Orioles’ lineup throughout the new season and the next four years.
