Kazuma Okamoto’s first spring training home run emerges, showcasing the Blue Jays’ much-anticipated power hitter.

Kazuma Okamoto’s first home run in a Toronto Blue Jays jersey was commanding. During today’s spring training matchup where the Blue Jays lost 3-4 to the New York Yankees, he launched a 431-foot shot deep to center field, unstoppable even against the wind. The ball landed directly on the upper section of the batting backdrop, an area usually reserved for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

“I’ve been working hard throughout this spring training, practicing a lot in the batting cage and doing live batting drills, constantly communicating with the coaches,” Okamoto said through translator Yusuke Oshima. “I want to be at my best when the season starts, so I’m really happy to have hit my first homer early.”

Waiting for him at the top of the stairs in the resting area was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The two have grown close, often grouped together for batting practice and even doing extra first base defense drills.

“Seeing their reactions makes me want to hit even more homers for this team,” Okamoto said.

When the Blue Jays signed this Japanese power hitter to a four-year, $60 million contract, they knew he had long-ball potential. But seeing it firsthand at the Blue Jays’ training facility, even early in spring training, feels different. Okamoto hit 30+ homers for six consecutive seasons with the Yomiuri Giants, peaking at 41 homers in 2023.

Teammates have long praised Okamoto’s swing, with Ernie Clement calling it “one of the smoothest right-handed swings you’ll ever see.”

This is exactly the offensive power and slugging ability the Blue Jays expect from Okamoto in his rookie season. Yes, replacing Bo Bichette requires a team effort, but Okamoto is the most direct answer. Though he needs time to adjust to facing a whole new league of pitchers, the Blue Jays are optimistic his smooth, efficient swing will help him transition well.

“His rhythm is excellent,” hitting coach David Popkins said. “He can adjust and hit as his front foot lands. He has power and can really do a lot. Timing adjustments always take a bit of time, but so far he looks fantastic. I like how he trains and look forward to seeing him unleash his full power.”

Okamoto is expected to play again on Thursday and Friday before heading back to Japan to join the national team in preparation for the World Baseball Classic.
