The condition of the two Japanese Samurai stars, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in the World Baseball Classic has been a major focus for fans. MLB reporter Yu Suzuki from Japan’s Fuji TV program "It!" recently visited the Los Angeles Dodgers' spring training camp to report on their progress.
On February 23, Shohei Ohtani took part in his last training session with the Dodgers as a two-way player. He pitched in his second live bullpen session of spring training, throwing a fastball reaching 99 mph (about 159 km/h). At the plate, he conducted batting practice with 35 swings, hitting 5 home runs. After observing Ohtani's training, Yu Suzuki noted, "Since his power hitting isn’t fully back yet, once he returns to Japan for actual games, his batting rhythm will improve. Currently, he is about 60% through his adjustment process."
Ace pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto took the mound on February 22 in his first Major League spring training game, pitching 1.2 innings against the Los Angeles Angels. He struck out 3 batters with a top speed of 94.9 mph (about 152.7 km/h), allowing 2 runs (1 earned run). In the first inning, he threw just 12 pitches for a perfect frame including two strikeouts; the second inning was affected by long delays, but overall his performance earned praise from head coach Dave Roberts. Yu Suzuki gave a specific assessment of Yamamoto’s progress, stating, "Yamamoto is currently 80% through his adjustment. He showed excellent control against the Angels and now just needs to focus on extending his innings."
