The Tokyo Classic is about to begin, with Team Chinese Taipei starting pitcher Hsu Jo-Hsi to face Australia's Alex Wells in the opening game.

The sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic in 2026 kicks off on March 5 at the Tokyo Dome, with Group C leading the schedule. The first day's matinee (11:00 AM Beijing Time) will see Team Chinese Taipei go head-to-head with Team Australia. During the press conference held on the 4th, the starting pitchers were revealed, as Chinese Taipei selected Hsu Jo-Hsi to start against the Australian side.

Regarding the responsibility of starting the opening game, Hsu Jo-Hsi stated he is nearly ready, saying, "For tomorrow's game, I'll bring out my best and secure the first victory." He threw an extended bullpen session on the 3rd, explaining, "I was just throwing easily, getting a feel for any difference between my fastball and breaking balls. There wasn't much difference; my body feels completely normal, and I'm prepared for tomorrow's game."

Hsu Jo-Hsi also mentioned at the press conference that he would maintain a relaxed mindset to avoid affecting his performance. "I don't really have too many thoughts; I just tell myself to bring my best to the game. Today, I'll focus on resting well, and deal with tomorrow when it comes."

Team Chinese Taipei's head coach, Tseng Hao-Chu, explained the reasoning behind choosing Hsu Jo-Hsi for the opening start: "It signifies that he is the pitcher we've observed to be the most prepared." He expressed hope that Hsu would deliver an impressive performance tomorrow to suppress the opponent.

Team Australia also announced their starting pitcher today, which, as expected, will be left-hander Alex Wells. The 29-year-old Wells currently plays in the Australian Baseball League and has Major League experience, having pitched 3 innings over 2 games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 and 2022. He was also a member of the Australian team in the 2017 Classic.

Speaking about facing Team Chinese Taipei tomorrow, Wells said, "I'm very excited, and also a bit nervous. I will give my all and face the game with my abilities." He considers Chinese Taipei to be a top-tier team globally, highly skilled, and commands his respect. "Regardless of the opponent, I believe in my own capabilities and will meet tomorrow's challenge."
