Spring training condition difficult to reach 100% – How to prepare for the Classic? Ohtani: The courage to rest is important.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic is set to start. Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani today shared his preparation thoughts in a pre-game interview. Ohtani mentioned that in short-term international competitions, players need to fine-tune their form within a constrained timeframe, and moderate rest is just as essential.

Ohtani disclosed that he is typically inclined to keep practicing, making extra adjustments as long as his stamina permits. However, during the Classic preparation phase, he also believes rest is part of the training. "Since it's spring training now, most players find it hard to reach 100 percent condition, so the 'courage to rest' is actually very important," Ohtani explained. Sometimes "not practicing" is also part of the preparation, and deciding what to do and when to stop for rest requires each player's own judgment.

Ohtani noted that the national team gathers many top-tier players, each with their own adjustment methods, and they can learn different experiences from one another. Discussing batting adjustments, Ohtani said, "Facing Japanese pitchers again after a long time, the feeling is slightly different from the types of pitchers in official games."

Ohtani emphasized that content is more important than results. "Regardless of whether there's a hit, as long as the plate appearance task is completed according to plan, I think that's good content." Speaking about the competitive intensity of this Classic, Ohtani said the strength of each country is very close, and there are few games that can be won easily. "Just like the previous tournament, there are hardly any matches you can take lightly." Ohtani added that the team also anticipates possibly falling behind; no matter what happens, they must respond calmly. "As long as we stay composed, I believe we can play many wonderful games."
