Pittsburgh Pirates trade with Cincinnati Reds to acquire the 19th overall prospect Callihan.

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed an intra-division trade today, acquiring Tyler Callihan from the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, the Pirates sent right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas.

The 25-year-old Callihan was ranked as the Reds' No. 19 prospect by MLB Pipeline before the trade. He was selected by Cincinnati in the third round of the 2019 draft and has compiled a .749 OPS over 396 minor league games. Callihan made his major league debut last April, recording one hit in six plate appearances. As a utility player, he can cover second base, first base, and left field, and currently has minor league options remaining, meaning he does not necessarily need to be on the Pirates' Opening Day roster.

On May 5 last year in Atlanta, Callihan suffered a season-ending left forearm fracture after colliding with the outfield wall.

The 27-year-old Nicolas pitched for the Pirates over three seasons from 2023 to 2025, appearing in 86 games and logging 98 innings with a 4.68 ERA. He was originally selected by the Miami Marlins in the Competitive Balance Round B of the 2020 draft and was traded to the Pirates in November 2021 as part of a four-player deal that sent Jacob Stallings to the Miami Marlins.
