Today at Houston's Minute Maid Park, USA's designated hitter Kyle Schwarber launched a spectacular go-ahead home run against Britain, with the ball flying directly to the second level of the right-field stands. This is the most significant hit for the USA in the current World Baseball Classic tournament.
Schwarber's home run propelled the USA to a 9-1 win over Britain. The USA has now achieved two straight victories and will face a heavyweight clash against Mexico next Tuesday, which is also the most anticipated match in Group B.
When Schwarber stepped up to bat in the fifth inning, the powerful USA offense had been stifled throughout the game. This Philadelphia slugger once again rose to the occasion on the international stage. Schwarber crushed a cutter from Andre Scrubb 427 feet, electrifying the 34,368 fans in Houston. That swing sparked a five-run inning for the USA, with Gunnar Henderson later contributing a crucial two-out, two-run double.
Manager Mark DeRosa moved Schwarber to the leadoff spot in the lineup against Britain. He had caused significant damage in this role with the Phillies; previously, in the USA's first Classic game against Brazil, Schwarber batted cleanup. This adjustment proved timely.
“During the season, I discussed with Schwarber multiple times about where he wanted to hit in the lineup,” DeRosa said before the game. “He said, ‘Whether you put me at leadoff or cleanup, I won’t change my approach.’”
That approach is simply: crush the ball.
Britain must have felt déjà vu, having witnessed Schwarber launch a similar decisive home run in the 2023 Classic. Schwarber's performance for the USA has been monstrous. He also hit a homer that soared to the second deck against Japan in the 2023 championship. Over seven career Classic games, his slugging percentage stands at 0.727 with an OPS of 1.243.
Schwarber, who led the National League with 56 homers last season, and captain Aaron Judge, who blasted 53 for the Yankees last year, have both homered for the USA in the 2026 Classic. Judge hit a home run in his first Classic at-bat yesterday against Brazil.
