The red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers secured their fourth consecutive victory, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-5. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, down by one and runners on first and second, catcher Dalton Rushing delivered a game-tying single to right. A throwing error by the Orioles allowed the runner on first to score the decisive run. The "Reiwa Monster" Roki Sasaki started, tossing 5.2 innings with six strikeouts, allowing three runs and earning a no-decision. The team's two-way star, Shohei Ohtani, missed the game to be with his wife for the birth of their child.
Reflecting on his outing, Roki Sasaki said after the game that overall he pitched the way he wanted, with solid stuff. Although he was eventually tied up, most of his pitching strategy was executed properly. Regarding the two home runs he allowed, he admitted the first came from a splitter that didn't drop, moving like a cutter—clearly a mistake. For the second, even though he threw to the catcher's target, the batter still crushed it. He believes the pitch selection might have been off and plans to discuss it with the coaching staff.
Compared to his previous start, Sasaki showed significant improvement in his breaking ball control. He noted that in his last outing, his off-speed pitches were off, allowing hitters to lock onto his fastball. As a result, he specifically worked on his slider, ensuring it would enter the strike zone while maintaining movement. He emphasized that his grip hadn't changed; he simply adjusted a blind spot after talking with the coach. With his fastball performing well, he was able to be more aggressive against batters when ahead in the count.
When asked about the ongoing FIFA World Cup, Sasaki laughed and said he caught the tail end of Japan's last match. The reporter reminded him that Japan's team would play tomorrow, and he initially said he'd cheer them on if he had time. But upon learning that the game might overlap with the Dodgers' schedule, he quickly changed his answer with a grin, saying he wouldn't be able to watch. However, after hearing that the broadcast time might just fit in, he humorously shifted the responsibility to his teammate: "Then I'll leave it to Yoshinobu Yamamoto to handle!"
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Sasaki after the game: "I thought he pitched really well. The stuff was good, he competed, and his fastball command was excellent. He was really impressive tonight."
