The New York Mets have officially confirmed that Carlos Mendoza is relieved of his duties as manager. Andy Green has been named interim manager to lead the team through the rest of the 2026 season. The announcement was made by David Stearns, the Mets' President of Baseball Operations.
Stearns said: "Carlos led this team with passion and grace, and everyone who worked with him daily holds him in high regard. Over the past three seasons, his impact on the players, coaching staff, and team culture has been profound. However, it is undeniable that our performance has fallen far short of expectations, and a change was necessary to move forward."
Mets owner, chairman, and CEO Steve Cohen also expressed his respect for Mendoza: "I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering dedication. During his tenure, he represented this organization with integrity and professionalism. I sincerely wish him and his family all the best. Our commitment to building a championship-caliber team for our fans has never wavered. There is no need to sugarcoat it: this season has been disappointing, and our fans deserve much better."
Mendoza was named manager before the 2024 season and led the team to the National League Championship Series that same year. He was a finalist for the NL Manager of the Year award in 2024, and his overall record with the Mets stands at 206 wins and 198 losses.
Green, 48, joined the Mets in 2023 after serving as Senior Vice President of Baseball Development. He will immediately assume the role of interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season. Green previously managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019, posting a record of 274 wins and 366 losses (a .428 winning percentage). As a player, he served as an infielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks for four seasons (2004–2006) and appeared in four games for the New York Mets in 2009.
