In the third game of a four-game series between the Yankees and Red Sox, Cheng Tsung-che made his second straight start. Although he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and couldn't notch a hit for two consecutive games, the Red Sox capitalized on Masataka Yoshida's leadoff home run in the first inning to win 4-1, defeating the Yankees for the third time in a row.
New York's starting pitcher was ace right-hander Gerrit Cole, returning from injury. In the bottom of the first inning, facing Red Sox leadoff man Masataka Yoshida, Cole threw two consecutive four-seam fastballs high and outside. Yoshida let the first one go, then swung at the second, launching it over the wall between center and right field into Boston's bullpen for a leadoff home run! The Red Sox struck first.
In the bottom of the second inning, with one out, Cole gave up another solo home run, making it 2-0. Cheng Tsung-che came to the plate with two outs and swung at Cole's first pitch—a 97 mph sinker—sending a fly ball to left field for an out. In the bottom of the third, the lineup turned over to Yoshida, who recorded hits in consecutive at-bats. The Red Sox opened the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. With one out, Willson Contreras hit a two-run double, extending the lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cheng Tsung-che came to bat again with two outs, once more facing Cole. With a 2-2 count, he swung at a changeup outside the strike zone and grounded out to second base. In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Cheng faced New York's second reliever. After a strike, he challenged a ball call and got it overturned, but eventually struck out swinging on a 2-1 count when he fouled a pitch that was caught by the catcher.
Cheng Tsung-che finished the game 0-for-3 with one strikeout. The Red Sox rode their four runs from the first three innings to a 4-1 win over the Yankees, securing their third straight victory.
