With the new season just around the corner, Phillies star first baseman Bryce Harper has shown flexibility in his defensive position and said he would be willing to return to the outfield if the team needs it. After undergoing right elbow ligament replacement surgery (Tommy John) in 2022, Harper was moved to first base by the team, and now he does not rule out returning to the familiar outfield as the team needs the roster.
Speaking to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Harper revealed that he had discussed with the team the possibility of moving back to the outfield during the offseason. He emphasised that this was not the team's plan, but "just in case" and that he was willing to make adjustments if the team found a player who was better suited to guard first base.
Harpo entered the major leagues and defended three outside fields, most of them as a right fielder, until he was moved to first base by the Phillies after TJ surgery. He also mentioned in the interview that when star first baseman Pete Alonso was not yet sure whether to stay with the Mets, he had hoped that the Phillies would try to sign the heavy gun, and even told the team and agent Scott Boras that he would be willing to return to the outfield if needed.
According to ESPN, Alonso ultimately opted to stay with the Mets, but could still jump out of his contract and become a free agent at the end of the new season. In addition, the Blue Jays are expected to hit Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as well, and first base will be a favorite to strengthen the team. Harpo's attitude allows the Phillies to be more flexible with their lineup without having to worry too much about overlapping defensive positions.
While willing to adapt the lineup to the needs of the team, Harpo admits that it would be an incredible achievement to win the Golden Glove award at first base.
