Juan Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million super deal with the New York Mets this winter, breaking the record for the highest guaranteed payment in professional sports history, but now he has revealed that some teams have offered higher contracts.
Soto mentioned the incident on Abriendo Sports' podcast, where he said the Mets weren't the highest-paying team: "There are five teams that want to sign me that are frontrunners in the Soto signing game, the Dodgers, the Blue Jays, the Red Sox, the Mets and the Yankees. There are teams that offer me more contracts than the Mets."
The total guaranteed payment of the contract issued by the Mets is $765 million over 15 years without delays. At the time, several New York media outlets reported that the Yankees were offering $760 million over 16 years. According to several Boston media outlets, the Red Sox offered contracts worth about $700 million. The Athletic reported that Dodger's offer was only $600 million.
As for the Blue Jay, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that they are also believed to have offered a total of $760 million in contracts, but there are also other media reports that the Blue Jay's offer may be less than $700 million. Regardless of the number, it was reported that the Mets offered the highest price before, but now Soto himself says that there are teams that offer more.
In response, SNY reporter Andy Martino said that a source with direct knowledge of the matter revealed that it is clear that multiple teams, including the Red Sox, are willing to offer higher contracts if they know that Soto will sign. It's just that Soto chose the Met, in part because of the family atmosphere created by Alex Cohen, the wife of Met owner Steve Cohen.
