The 28-year-old Dodgers were banned from the major leagues for most of the season by left-handed shooting, the league's first domestic violence habitual offender

MLB announced that former Dodgers left-handed pitcher Julio Urías will be suspended for most of the season until the end of this year's All-Star Game (July 17), and he is the first player to be punished twice for domestic violence. Urías was arrested by police in September 2023 and was seen beating his female companion in the parking lot, and he continued to do so after the two got into the car. In January 2024, the prosecution decided not to prosecute for aggravated domestic violence, and in April of the same year, Urias was indicted with five misdemeanors: assault on a spouse, two counts of assault on a female partner, unlawful confinement, and assault.

A native of Mexico, Urias joined the Los Angeles Dodgers at the age of 16, made it to the major leagues at the age of 19 (2016), and became the youngest pitcher to make the playoffs at the age of 20. He was arrested in 2019 for domestic violence when he pushed his female partner to the ground, was forced to take a 52-week domestic violence counseling course, and was banned for 20 games by the major leagues.

Dodgers continued to use Urias after his first domestic violence case, and he was a finalist for the National League Young Award in 2021 with a career-best record of 20-3 and a 2.96 ERA. In 2022, Urias started 31 games and dominated the National League with a 2.16 self-blame rate, with another 17 wins and 7 defeats. After his arrest in 2023, he never appeared in the Dodgers arena again, and the club even emptied his locker early, which was tantamount to telling everyone that he would not be returning.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent and will not be able to sign until the end of his suspension. Urias, who earned $14.25 million a year in his final season with the Dodgers, is favored to get a big contract of at least $200 million or more if there are no domestic violence cases. Despite losing Urias, the Dodgers won the World Series the following year, in 2024, and this year they built up a rotating starting pitcher roster that was the envy of all teams this offseason.
