Rare penalty leads to Atletico Madrid's defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League! UEFA is considering amending the existing rules

In the second round of the Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid last week, Atletico Madrid striker Alvarez was ruled invalid for a rare second touch of the ball in the PK match, which led to Atletico Madrid's 2-4 defeat to Real Madrid in the PK match, which also caused dissatisfaction among the Atletico Madrid team after the game, in response to which the European Football Federation announced that they would further discuss with FIFA and the FIFA Council (IFAB) whether the rule needs to be amended.

In the 12-yard penalty shoot-out between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League, Alvarez's 12-yard penalty was ruled disqualified by VAR as he slipped before his shot was taken, resulting in both feet touching the ball before the shot. According to Rule 14.1 of the existing rules, if a player makes contact with the ball with a non-shooter before taking a penalty kick, the VAR must notify the referee that the goal is void.

The decision sparked displeasure among Atletico's coaching staff, with manager Simeone expressing his displeasure to reporters during the post-match press conference, saying that the ball did not move before the kick. UEFA later provided replay footage showing Alvarez's non-shot foot making minimal contact with the ball.

Since Alvarez's second touch was unintentional, and this decision ultimately became the key to Atletico's defeat in the 12-yard penalty shootout, UEFA will discuss this rule with FIFA and the FIFA Council whether the above rule can be adjusted to avoid the outcome of the game in the future.
