After Naylor's exit, the Mariners swept the White Sox in extra innings, tightening the AL West race.

The Seattle Mariners are close to achieving full health, but today's new addition, Josh Naylor, unexpectedly exited due to left shoulder pain, making the team more cautious.

Nevertheless, they could at least celebrate the series sweep by narrowly winning against the White Sox 4-3 in the 11th inning. This win puts the Mariners only 1.5 games behind the division-leading Houston Astros in the AL West standings. Naylor's injury is currently listed as day-to-day.

Dominic Canzone hit a single through the right side gap against left-hander Brandon Eisert with one out in the 11th inning, allowing the automatic runner Eugenio Suárez to sprint home from second base, avoiding a tag from catcher Edgar Quero.

“He wasn’t trying to hit it out of the park,” said head coach Dan Wilson. “That’s not what we needed. He delivered an almost perfect single.”

Canzone’s ability to step into the batter's box at such a critical moment—against a lefty in a high-pressure situation where he might have been pinch-hit for not long ago—shows how much he has progressed after two lengthy stints in Triple-A Tacoma.

Canzone was called up to the majors for two games from April 8 to 9 and returned again on June 9, gradually solidifying his role as a regular right fielder without being restricted by left-right matchups. During this time, he has posted a batting average of .293 and an OPS of .840.

“You can feel frustrated there and might not be your best self,” Canzone said, “or you can choose to take another approach, appreciate the opportunity to play baseball every day, and work hard for it.”

Canzone's breakthrough was the perfect conclusion to a crazy afternoon. In this game, the Mariners left the bases loaded in a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning, and in the tenth inning, the winning run was once on third base with a 3-3 tie. They also lost the lead in the tenth inning due to a wild pitch, and prior to that, the White Sox loaded the bases due to a hit-by-pitch on Eduard Bazardo (initially ruled as hitting Curtis Mead's bat).

Wilson challenged the call—similar to the July 19 ruling where Dylan Moore was ruled a hit—but today’s call was upheld.

“In this sport, if you’re involved long enough, you’ll see almost everything,” Wilson said.

Then, in Bazardo's next at-bat, he threw a fastball at 98 mph that slipped past catcher Mitch Garver's glove and flew into the backstop, putting the Mariners behind for the first time that afternoon.

Had the outcome gone another way, especially considering Randy Arozarena's two-run homer in the second inning and his spectacular catch in the ninth that kept the Mariners in the game, this day could have been seen as a missed opportunity.

As for Naylor, the first baseman was replaced at the start of the fourth inning after grimacing during his last at-bat in the third inning, where he hit a ground ball to first. Naylor also showed discomfort during his first at-bat, striking out in the second inning after several swings.

“We will get some answers soon and continue to monitor his situation,” Wilson said. “I think it’s just a day-to-day observation.”

When Naylor exited, the Seattle team was still leading 2-0, but as Logan Gilbert and Carlos Vargas were hit with back-to-back home runs, the lead evaporated.

Naylor's position was filled by veteran Donovan Solano, who hadn’t appeared in a game since Naylor was traded from Arizona on July 24.

Naylor has been on fire since joining the new team, with 12 hits in 46 at-bats over 13 games, including 3 home runs, and a slash line of .261/.320/.478 (OPS .798). He has also successfully stolen 10 bases, leading the majors in that category since the trade.

Today's developments occurred a few hours before the game when Bryce Miller (right elbow inflammation) was scheduled to make his second rehab start in Triple-A Tacoma later today. Meanwhile, outfielder and first baseman Luke Raley (back spasms) and Victor Robles (left shoulder dislocation) may also be approaching their rehab assignments in the coming days.

Naylor has not been placed on the injured list this season, despite having experienced issues with his right shoulder earlier in the season, when he also showed pain after a hard swing. He was forced to leave a game on June 23, also against the White Sox, in the fourth inning, but returned the next day.

Wilson stated that this issue is unrelated to the previous one.

“Nothing like this has happened since he got here,” Wilson said.
