Is the Reiwa monster getting closer to recovery? Sasaki Rōki's live batting practice shows progress but still needs to build confidence.

After his recovery, Dodgers' Japanese rookie pitcher Sasaki Rōki participated in his third live batting practice (Live BP), simulating three innings with 46 pitches, achieving a maximum speed of 97 mph (about 156.1 km/h). He faced 9 batters, giving up only 1 hit and experimenting with new pitch types. Head coach Dave Roberts praised his fastball and splitter performance, noting improvements in his physique and mechanics, but emphasized that he still needs to gain experience through games and establish a consistent pitching routine to fully build his confidence.

Today, Sasaki Rōki faced a total of 9 batters, allowing 1 hit, recording 2 strikeouts, and issuing 1 walk. In addition to maintaining a high standard with his fastball, he also experimented with new pitches, throwing a splitter against right-handed batters and a cutter against left-handed batters, demonstrating a proactive approach to adjustments and experimentation.

Roberts stated that Sasaki Rōki's fastball quality is satisfactory, and some of his splitters showed good effectiveness. He has completed the planned tasks for this phase, and if everything goes well, the team will consider scheduling him for a rehab game.

Roberts also observed that Sasaki Rōki's physique is sturdier than before, and his pitching mechanics are smoother, but he is still a step away from facing batters with complete confidence. "He is still adjusting his pitching mechanics and needs to solidify his stance through continuous practice. The moment he can consistently dominate hitters will be when he truly builds his confidence."

Regarding Sasaki Rōki's next steps, whether to schedule a rehab game or another simulated game, Roberts stated that a decision has not yet been made. "He is still in the exploratory phase, asking questions to the pitching coach, which is quite normal. Once he reaches a level of true comfort and confidence in his pitching style and condition, he will be able to attack hitters."

Sasaki Rōki's return timeline will depend on the performance in his rehab start, but the Dodgers are confident in his recovery. If all goes well, he is expected to return to the major league mound in early September, providing crucial support for the team's playoff push.
