The Japanese pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, Tomoyuki Sugano, delivered a quality start today (9th), leading his team to victory over the Athletics and securing his ninth win of the season, with a chance to achieve double-digit wins in his next start.
At the beginning of the game, the Orioles struck early in the first inning. Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle hit back-to-back home runs, quickly establishing a 3-run lead. This offensive support allowed Sugano to pitch with greater confidence. He pitched a total of seven innings today, allowing five hits, striking out four batters, and giving up only one run, lowering his ERA to 4.24.
In the top of the first inning, Sugano recorded two outs with just two pitches, and the third out of the inning was a strikeout, achieving a perfect 7-pitch inning. In the bottom of the first, after two consecutive strikeouts, the Orioles’ lineup managed to get three batters on base, scoring a 3-0 lead with one walk and two home runs.
From the second to the seventh innings, Sugano only allowed the opposing team to go three up, three down in the fourth inning. He faced runners in scoring position three times but only allowed a run in the fifth inning due to a sacrifice fly. He completed seven innings with 91 pitches, recording four strikeouts, two walks, and five hits, allowing one earned run. This marked Sugano's tenth "quality start" of the season and his fifth quality start of at least seven innings, in which he has secured four wins.
The Orioles relied on the three runs scored early in the game to maintain their lead until the end, ultimately winning 3-2, which also earned Sugano his ninth victory of the season. In his next start, he will have the opportunity to challenge for his tenth career win in the Major Leagues.
After the game, Sugano commented in an interview that his control was quite good today, and he specifically mentioned the importance of catcher Rutschman, who has just returned from the injured list: “For me, Rutschman’s return is very important; he guides the game exceptionally well.”
