Former Cy Young winner Bieber will make his Blue Jays debut in Miami on Saturday.

The anticipation is finally over—Shane Bieber is set for his first outing with the Blue Jays this Saturday in Miami.

Manager John Schneider announced this ahead of today’s series opener against the Pirates. While there are still unresolved questions about Bieber’s role, the key decision has now been made.

“When you bring in a player of that caliber, it’s easy to get excited,” Schneider said. “Once you get to know him, he’s the definition of a professional. He fits seamlessly into our rotation. He’s incredibly smart—he knows his strengths and what he wants to accomplish. Right now, he’s very confident.”

Since then, the schedule has aligned perfectly. Depending on how the Blue Jays arrange their rotation, Bieber’s next two starts after Miami are likely to come against the Brewers at home from August 29 to 31—his first home game—and then versus the Yankees from September 5 to 7.

After being acquired at the trade deadline for Khal Stephen, Bieber has completed the final steps of his recovery from ligament reconstruction surgery, passing every milestone smoothly. In his last Triple-A Buffalo appearance, he threw seven scoreless innings on 90 pitches, showcasing his pinpoint control and advanced pitch mix.

Expecting Bieber to immediately return to his peak form is a tall order, but he now has over a month to readjust and address any lingering issues ahead of the playoffs. Moreover, when Bieber is at his best, he’s consistently been one of the top starters in the majors. He’s capable of dominating games and has logged over 200 innings twice in his career.

“You can put him among those elite pitchers who command different zones with a variety of pitches,” Schneider said. “That makes it tough for hitters to sit on just one pitch. He also adjusts based on what he sees from batters. When you have someone with great stuff and strong in-game awareness, you’re looking at a Cy Young-caliber pitcher.”

But what about beyond Bieber? That remains an open question.

Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer, and Chris Bassitt will pitch for the Blue Jays in Pittsburgh this week, with Eric Lauer and José Berríos also in the mix. The team is increasingly likely to consider a six-man rotation, at least to start, mainly because none of the starters stand out as obvious candidates to move to the bullpen. Of course, Berríos has struggled recently, but his pitch arsenal is built for starting, and his previous performances this month support that role.

“We’ve always said that until that day—until Saturday—we’re basing everything on each starter’s innings and health in this series,” Schneider explained. “We’ll also see how he pitches Saturday and go from there. We have a plan, but we’ll stay flexible until Thursday.”

This is one of those ‘good problems’ only great teams get to discuss, and with Bieber officially joining the squad, the Blue Jays are only getting stronger.
