The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Rockies on the road today. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched seven innings, throwing 103 pitches, giving up four hits (including a home run), striking out six, and walking or hitting two, allowing three runs. Shohei Ohtani finished with two hits, but the Dodgers’ three-game winning streak was snapped by a walk-off single from the Rockies in the ninth, as they lost 3-4.
Yamamoto celebrated his birthday on the 17th, and today was his first start as a 27-year-old. In the bottom of the first, Shohei Ohtani led off with a single to right field in his first plate appearance.
In the top of the second inning, Dodgers’ Alex Call and Miguel Rojas recorded hits, and the team scored first thanks to a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. With two outs and a runner on third, Shohei Ohtani singled to center field, driving in another run.
Yamamoto struck out three of the first six batters he faced in the opening two innings. However, in the bottom of the third, he walked the leadoff batter, then gave up a single to right, putting runners on second and third with no outs, and allowed another hit that brought in two runs, tying the game.
In the top of the fifth, Shohei Ohtani lined a ball that looked destined to be a hit, but the shortstop made a spectacular diving catch. In the sixth, Freddie Freeman drew a walk, stole second with one out, and Alex Freeland singled with two outs to put the Dodgers ahead. Ohtani struck out in the seventh inning.
Yamamoto then retired the side in order for three straight innings, seemingly regaining his rhythm. Leading by one run in the bottom of the seventh, he struck out the first batter, but then gave up a solo home run to Ezequiel Tovar. Yamamoto exited after seven innings, having allowed three runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Justin Wrobleski came on in relief for the Dodgers. With one out, Tovar doubled, and Warming Bernabel followed with a walk-off single to end the game.
