For the first time in franchise history, the Phillies saw Harper blast two home runs over 440 feet in a single game.

Bryce Harper, the Phillies’ two-time NL MVP, delivered his longest home run since 2023 today, then followed it up with an even longer shot in the next half-inning.

Harper’s first home run of the night came in the sixth inning, and Statcast measured it at 440 feet, reaching the second deck in right-center. It was his farthest since September 23, 2023, but he broke that record less than an hour later.

In the seventh, Harper launched a missile that struck the outer wall of the second deck in right-center. Statcast estimated it traveled 448 feet. Harper accounted for two of the Phillies’ four homers in their 12-7 rout of the Mariners to open the series.

So, after nearly two years without a home run of at least 440 feet, Harper hit two in one night. He’s the only player in the majors this season to hit multiple 440-foot homers in the same game—and the first Phillie to do so since Statcast began tracking in 2015.

“I think I’ve played really well over the last 30 games,” Harper said, having tallied 22 extra-base hits (including 11 homers) and a .956 OPS in that span. “I’ve been swinging with power, playing at my best… but tonight was a big night for our whole offense.”

The Phillies finished with a season-high 21 hits. According to Elias Sports Bureau, every Phillies starter had at least one hit before the third inning—a feat they hadn’t accomplished since September 28, 1963.

Perhaps even more important than the offensive explosion was Ranger Suárez’s performance, which looked much more like his dominant first-half self than his recent struggles. Entering the night, Suárez had posted a 6.59 ERA in his previous five starts, but against the Mariners, he pitched 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs. The lefty notched a career-high 10 strikeouts with zero walks.

“He was really good—very good,” manager Rob Thomson said. “That was his best outing in a while.”

This all-around team effort came just hours after the news that ace Zack Wheeler had successfully undergone a thrombectomy to remove a blood clot from his right arm. The Phillies aren’t sure when Wheeler will return—or if he’ll be back at all this season.

In the meantime, everyone in the rotation will be expected to step up—especially Suárez.

“Obviously, we don’t know how long he’ll be out. Personally, I just hope he recovers as quickly and as well as possible,” Suárez said through an interpreter. “Coming to the ballpark today, maybe our whole starting staff was thinking: We lost a great pitcher, we lost a great teammate, and we have to do our best to fill that gap.”

Suárez certainly did his part in this much-needed bounce-back performance. So did Trea Turner.

Trea Turner finally hit his first home run of the season at Citizens Bank Park—a three-run shot in the second inning to break the tie. It was also the 1,500th hit of his career. He finished the night with four hits in six at-bats and drove in five runs.

“When you lose a player of that caliber, it definitely hurts,” Turner said about Wheeler. “We don’t have to rely on just one guy. We can all do a little more. We can play better defense, pitch better, hit better. If we all step up as a team, I think we’ll get the job done. But we’ll miss him.”

Tonight, nearly everyone stepped up. In addition to Harper, Suárez, and Turner’s contributions, J.T. Realmuto hit his first home run since July 25, and Nick Castellanos, who had just one hit in his previous 33 at-bats over eight games (.030), recorded multiple hits for the second straight game.

And all this happened on a night when everyone in a Phillies uniform had priorities far beyond just a baseball game. Yet from a baseball standpoint, it perfectly illustrated what it will take to make up for Wheeler’s absence, no matter how long it lasts.

“It’s not something you can easily put out of your mind,” Harper said. “But obviously, Zack wants us to go out there, play our game, perform well, make a deep playoff run, and win the World Series.

“That’s our goal, and it’s what he wants us to achieve.”
