Sitting down to dance! Westbrook makes a cameo in a female artist’s latest music video — can he still continue his NBA career?

On August 24th Beijing time, nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook unexpectedly appeared in the music video for singer Ciara’s new single “Dance With Me.” Around the 2-minute mark in the video, Westbrook and Ciara perform a seated dance scene together in front of the iconic Randy’s Donuts shop in Inglewood, California.

This collaboration marks another venture by Westbrook into the entertainment world. Currently a free agent, he has yet to sign with any team. Last season, Westbrook played for the Denver Nuggets, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game before becoming a free agent at season’s end.

From the court to the camera: Westbrook’s crossover journey

This is not Westbrook’s first foray into the music industry. Over the years, the veteran guard has made numerous guest appearances in music videos, showcasing impressive performances on camera:

In June 2024, he danced alongside rapper Kendrick Lamar to Lamar’s hit track “Not Like Us.”

Earlier in 2021, Westbrook appeared with LeBron James in rapper Nas’s “Brunch on Sundays” music video — proving that beyond his basketball highlights, he is equally comfortable in front of the camera. These cross-industry appearances have helped him become one of the NBA’s most culturally connected players.

Can his NBA career continue?

Although Westbrook’s dance cameo delighted fans, his NBA future remains uncertain. NBA insider Fischer revealed that if Westbrook decides to keep playing, the Sacramento Kings seem to be his “only potential destination”; however, Fischer also noted that Westbrook might even retire from the NBA next season.

If he joins the Kings, Westbrook will likely only receive a veteran minimum contract, and his role on the team remains unclear — for the 36-year-old, this means facing a tough decision: accept a reduced role or explore other options, including playing overseas.

As NBA teams finalize their rosters for the new season, Westbrook’s basketball future remains an open question.
