China Derby! Kyle Lowry advises Yang Hansheng to stay patient: Everyone in the NBA was once the best

On October 30th Beijing time, the Trail Blazers face the Jazz on the road, with the China Derby anticipated. Kyle Lowry, who has yet to play and is not listed as injured by the Jazz, may debut for the Jazz in this match, while Yang Hansheng is also expected to participate. Ahead of the game, reporter Li Hanlin caught up with Lowry at morning practice and discussed Yang Hansheng with him.

Lowry greeted fans in Chinese first, then spoke about not playing the first three games: “Everything is good, I’m ready now. The Jazz have many young players who are getting opportunities and working hard. I’m always prepared; it’s a long season. When the coach calls my name, I’ll be ready to step on the court.”

Having played for several NBA teams, Lowry talked about the challenges of moving around: “The biggest challenge is off the court — being away from family is tough. I miss my kids and wife. Luckily, they are with me now in Salt Lake City, and I enjoy the time together. On the court, it’s not ideal, but it’s a cool opportunity to play in different places and meet different people. I try to stay positive.”

Regarding Yang Hansheng, Lowry said: “I think he should have been on the national team during the World Cup. Of course, he’s still very young and was playing for the U19 team then. So, I cheer for him and am very proud. I hope to talk with him today. I’ve watched many of his games; his skills are excellent. He reminds me of Jokic’s style, at least from my perspective. Off the court, I hear he’s a great guy, enjoys joking around, and is a good kid.”

Lowry also mentioned he is keeping an eye on Hansheng: “He’s adapting and needs to stay patient. He might not be getting the minutes he wants yet, but he’s very young in this league and has a lot to learn. The key is to remain patient.”

Talking about how tough life is for NBA rookies, Lowry said: “It’s very hard because before this, you were the best. But once you get to the NBA, everyone was once the best. Everyone is extremely talented, wealthy, and famous. It’s a process of adjustment.”

Lowry shared that when he played for the Chinese national team, language was sometimes a barrier, but he received a lot of support. He hopes Hansheng can get similar help in Portland and continue to improve and grow.
