Should the Rockets pursue Morant to strengthen their backcourt? US media proposes a 7-for-1 trade plan: building a super luxury lineup to compete for the championship.

On November 2nd Beijing time, the Grizzlies suspended Morant for one game due to his conduct negatively affecting the team. Following the announcement, numerous media sources speculated that Morant’s ties with the Grizzlies’ coaching staff have broken down, making a trade very probable. If Morant departs from the Grizzlies, which franchises are potential destinations? Sportskeeda analyzed this and identified three teams with higher chances, with the Rockets considered the best fit for Morant. Their analysis is as follows—

The Houston Rockets are the most logical landing spot for Morant. To address offensive challenges, the Rockets have already acquired Kevin Durant, but they still need a point guard. The team has yet to find a replacement for starting point guard Fred VanVleet—who re-signed for two years at $50 million but suffered an ACL tear and will miss this season.

With Durant and Sengun on the roster, Morant’s playing pressure could be eased, and his three-point shooting might improve. The 26-year-old Morant fits well with the young core of Sengun, Amen, and Jabari Smith Jr., aligning with the team’s timeline even beyond the “Durant era.” Compared to waiting for VanVleet’s return, acquiring Morant is a better option—VanVleet will turn 32 in February and won’t recover from his knee injury until the 2026-27 season when he will be nearly 33.

Although the Rockets have won three consecutive games, the weakness at point guard must be addressed against stronger opponents. Morant could be considered a trade target.

Sportskeeda proposed a simulated 7-for-1 trade scenario, detailed as follows—

Rockets receive: Morant

Grizzlies receive: VanVleet, Finnie-Smith, Aaron Holiday, 2028 first-round pick, 2030 first-round pick, 2026 second-round pick, and 2028 second-round pick.

Through this deal, the Rockets would offload the contracts of injured players VanVleet and Finnie-Smith without giving up Shepard or Eason, but would give up two first-round picks and two second-round picks. Although Finnie-Smith holds a four-year contract, only next season’s salary is guaranteed. By 2027, the Grizzlies’ payroll will no longer include VanVleet, Finnie-Smith, or Holiday’s contracts.

So far this season, Morant averages 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, shooting 40.6% from the field and 15.6% from three-point range. However, many believe these numbers don’t reflect his true level, and a change of team might help him regain form.

Sportskeeda also named the Kings and Heat as two other possible destinations. Do you think Morant will leave the Grizzlies? Which team do you expect him to join? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
