Harden responds to Paul’s retirement this season: He is a true leader and a great brother who taught me a lot.

On November 23rd Beijing time, Harden scored 55 points with 10 threes against the Hornets. In the postgame interview, he was asked about Paul. Paul had already made up his mind to retire at the end of this season. As someone who has been teammates with Paul twice, Harden gave his perspective. Below is the relevant interview —

Reporter: You likely saw the video Paul released — he mentioned retiring after this season. How would you evaluate his career and his significance to the NBA?

Harden: There’s so much to say. Whether as the players’ union president or on the court, he has delivered outstanding performances on multiple teams. Clearly, he’s a winning point guard. I remember his assist numbers rank around second all-time. Wherever he goes, he influences the game and leads teams to victory. I’m lucky to have been his teammate twice. We also played together in the Olympics and had a great chance to compete for the championship in Houston. Although we didn’t achieve that, his career has been truly remarkable. He is a genuine leader, my good brother, a pure point guard who has profoundly impacted this sport in a positive way.

Reporter: How has he specifically helped your career?

Harden: For example, his ability to read the game and communicate on the court, making sure teammates are in the right spots. On offense, he taught me to observe defensive setups and strategies, enhancing my understanding on another level. During our time in Houston, he helped shoulder much of the offensive load — driving to the paint, creating shot opportunities, and maintaining aggression. We shared many great moments, and I’m proud of all he has accomplished.

Reporter: I know every career eventually comes to an end. Although his retirement isn’t surprising, have you talked about it before? Was it hard for him to make this decision?

Harden: No, after a 21-year career, there’s always an ending. I think he’s already preparing for the next phase. Obviously, he’s still out there competing now, but I believe his transition after the season will go smoothly. He’s always on calls and meetings, busy with various things. So I’m also paying attention and learning, getting ready for my own future day.
