To be honest, I’m only filled with disappointment now, and I truly can’t think of a better word. Initially, it was a shock, but the overwhelming feeling is disappointment. I feel regret for Paul and frustration toward the Clippers’ front office.

You have to understand, when Paul joined the Clippers, DeAndre Jordan and I were still just rookies in our first or second year. He brought a winning culture to the team, teaching us how to establish ourselves in the NBA, how to take every game seriously, and how to care for our bodies. In his eyes, every detail mattered. Of course, we weren’t perfect—we ultimately didn’t win a championship, and I’m well aware of that and reminded of it every day. Paul and I didn’t always see eye to eye, but my disappointment stems from the fact that we inherited a team once considered a joke.

Right? Whenever the Clippers were mentioned before, people thought of a “curse.” Although we never won the championship, we built a team respected throughout the league and created a new culture and atmosphere. Every year afterward, everyone knew the Clippers were a highly competitive team.

And Paul, for twenty years, has always been a player fighting for victory. He chose to sign with the Clippers, which should have been his moment—to return to Los Angeles and make one last push for his career. But in the end, he wasn’t able to leave the team he willingly chose and planned to retire with in the dignified way he wanted. That’s truly disappointing.

But the core reason for my disappointment is what Chris said: he had absolutely no communication with Tyronn Lue. Even more outrageous, he had no contact with Steve Ballmer either—I talked with Chris on Wednesday, yesterday, and today, and he personally confirmed this to me. That is the part that breaks my heart the most.
