On February 6th Beijing time, the trade between the Wizards and Mavericks was confirmed, officially making Anthony Davis a Wizards player. Chase Hughes from the Wizards reported that Davis will don the number 23 jersey, a number previously worn by Michael Jordan 23 years ago in 2003.

Davis has been out since mid-January because of a torn ligament in his left hand. The 10-time All-Star does not require surgery, and his recovery was initially projected to take 4 to 6 weeks.
After losing 67 and 64 games in the past two seasons respectively, the Wizards have recently made a significant shift in their rebuilding strategy. Washington acquired Trae Young last month via trade and now added Davis, forming a new core with young talents including the 2024 second overall pick, interior player Sarr.
Once everyone is healthy, Davis and Young will serve as the team's cornerstone. The roster also features promising young players like interior prospect Sarr, Keion George, Carrington, Koulibaly, and the impressive rookie Trae Johnson.
During his two partial seasons with the Mavericks, Davis played only 31 of 84 games, including two play-in games last season. He wore number 23 with the Pelicans, switched to number 3 with the Lakers and Mavericks, and now returns to number 23 with the Wizards.

Michael Jordan played two seasons with the Wizards, totaling 142 games with averages of 21.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, wearing number 23. After Jordan retired and before Davis joined, no Wizards player wore the number 23 jersey.
