Trail Blazers update on Yang Hanson's injury! Basketball expert analyzes current status and future: primary issue is three-point shooting

On February 26 Beijing time, the Trail Blazers have recalled Yang Hanson and updated his injury status. His participation in tomorrow’s game versus the Bulls is doubtful (50% likelihood), with the injury described as mid-back soreness. Previously, it was reported he had a back strain. Moreover, Lowry is questionable with right foot soreness, and Avdija, Lillard, Love, and Sharpe are all sidelined.

European basketball expert Najelicovic wrote a comprehensive analysis of Yang Hanson's current situation, pointing out that his foremost challenge is his three-point shooting. Below is the full analysis—

Yang Hanson attracted significant attention during the NBA draft, with the Portland Trail Blazers selecting him 16th overall in the first round, reflecting the team’s confidence in his long-term potential. Although many considered this pick somewhat high, the team’s choice shows their expectation that Hanson could develop into a uniquely styled, playmaking center.

Since entering the NBA and competing in the G League, Yang Hanson's limited playing time and on-court performance have raised doubts about his ability to adapt to the top-tier league. Despite his efforts to significantly improve his physicality, reportedly gaining 7–8 kilograms, his impact in official NBA games remains limited.

Analysis of Yang Hanson's performance and playing time

In 35 NBA games, Yang Hanson has averaged only 7.5 minutes per game, contributing 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists. These stats reflect his currently marginal role, but beyond the numbers lie greater challenges: his development is hindered by adapting to the NBA’s pace, positional fit, and offensive shortcomings.

Currently, Yang Hanson primarily serves as a backup to Donovan Clingan, and even when given opportunities, his offensive skills have yet to reach a level that can consistently earn him more playing time.

Offensive struggles: shooting consistency and defensive impact

The Trail Blazers initially valued Yang Hanson largely because they hoped to replicate the “Jokić effect.” The league now highly values centers who can both facilitate and stretch the floor with their passing.

Comparisons between Yang Hanson and Jokić, along with highlight reels showing a similar style in domestic competitions, greatly boosted his draft stock and external expectations. However, objectively reviewing his NBA performance reveals clear flaws explaining why he has yet to secure a stable role.

The primary issue is his three-point shooting. As Clingan’s backup, in his limited minutes, he has failed to capitalize on pick-and-pop opportunities—key for earning more playing time.

This season, he has made only 5 of 38 three-point attempts, a 13.2% success rate. Unless opponents start respecting his shooting, his playing will remain very difficult. Currently, defenders do not fear his perimeter shooting at all, allowing opposing centers to comfortably stay near the basket. Without shooting threat, his playmaking is neutralized and cannot effectively manipulate defenses.

Therefore, the core offensive challenge in his rookie season remains three-point shooting.

Defensive and physical limitations affecting playing time

Beyond offensive issues, Yang Hanson shows clear limitations defensively. His lateral quickness and overall athleticism cannot keep up with the modern NBA’s pace, making it hard for him to stay in transition or adapt to frequent switching defensive schemes.

Although he shows some potential as a rim protector, when the game speeds up, his physical shortcomings become apparent. Overcoming this requires elite offensive creativity and decision-making—currently only achieved by elite centers like Jokić and Şengün.

Yang Hanson is currently a high-risk, high-reward type: if he improves his offensive judgment and touch, he could establish himself, but his margin for error is extremely small.

G League performance: potential mixed with risk

With more playing time in the G League, Yang Hanson’s talent is more evident: across 9 games, he averaged 16.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 1.4 blocks, shooting 52.1% from the field, 27.3% from three, and 75% from the free-throw line.

This indicates he has the capability to take on a more central offensive role.

However, his turnover rate is very high: averaging 3.8 turnovers per game. Even at the lower defensive intensity of the G League, this suggests that upgrading his advanced playmaking to NBA level will be extremely challenging.

From current games, his game reading speed and judgment are not yet refined enough; when tasked with more responsibility, errors tend to increase.

Consistent playing time is crucial for growth

For a player with Yang Hanson’s complex skill set, steady minutes are key to building confidence and refining skills. Without sufficient real-game opportunities, his offensive creativity and adjustment to NBA intensity cannot be properly tested under true game pressure.

Jokić’s relatively smooth development was partly because he was a generational talent; Yang Hanson has not yet reached that level. In Summer League and sporadic NBA appearances, he occasionally flashes potential, but without a stable role, his real growth is far from starting. AP reporter Amanda Loman commented: “From this perspective, it’s premature to harshly criticize him now, as beyond brief appearances, he hasn’t had a true chance to prove himself.”

Trail Blazers’ competitive environment and Yang Hanson’s future prospects

The Trail Blazers are currently engaged in a fierce playoff race, making it difficult for the team to patiently develop a rookie who cannot yet contribute materially. At this stage, immediate competitiveness takes precedence over long-term cultivation.

Nevertheless, the Blazers have invested significant draft capital in Yang Hanson and ultimately must allocate more time to him to truly assess his value.

The road ahead remains challenging, and the possibility that Yang Hanson may fail to establish himself in the NBA is considerable; however, with proper development and ample opportunity, he still has a chance to grow into a valuable NBA player.
