Morant: Dislikes the trade sending away Jaren Jackson Jr., believes he can fit into any team

Prior to the trade deadline, Ja Morant was among the hottest topics in the NBA. Yet, after injuring his left elbow's ulnar collateral ligament on January 21, this Memphis guard had remained silent publicly. On March 8, as reported by a Grizzlies journalist, Morant addressed the media pre-game on Sunday, ending his period of silence.

Similar to his press conference in Berlin in January, Morant's responses were still brief, but he expressed views on several topics, including the surprising move last month that traded Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Jazz. Morant stated that this trade, which sent away a core member of the Grizzlies' playoff run last season, was hard for him to accept.

“I didn't like this trade,” he said, “but it's business. As I told him, he's already played eight years of professional basketball, just keep doing what he does.”

About two months ago, trade rumors surrounding Morant began to circulate. Reports indicated the team was willing to listen to offers, but ultimately no proposal met their expectations. However, the Grizzlies are expected to revisit trading him this summer. General Manager Zach Kleiman stated the team is rebuilding with youth, and Morant's contract exceeding $87 million over the next two years could be a burden for a team not in contention for a championship in the short term.

Although Morant had disagreements with head coach Thomas Issara, who took over late last season, he today expressed that he likes Memphis and hopes to stay.

“Why wouldn't I want to stay? I've always been happy here,” Morant said.

The reporter pressed further, asking if he believes he will still be with the Grizzlies next season.

“I hope so,” Morant replied, “You guys know more than I do; everything is online. All the things you ask me about are already out there on the internet.”

Morant also discussed the injury that sidelined him for over six weeks. He mentioned his elbow still feels discomfort, especially when making cross-court passes.

“It's most painful when making a strong pass to the opposite side with this hand,” Morant said, “Other than that, I feel I can push through, but I also need to be smart about it.”

He added that he hopes to return at some point this season and believes he won't need much time to regain his form since the injury doesn't affect his legs. He trusts he can seamlessly integrate with the new core of Coward, Edey, Spencer, and Wells, just as he did with his former teammates.

“I can fit into any team,” Morant stated, “I just need to bring what I always bring.”
