Unveiling Popovich's Rehabilitation Training: He Comes to the Gym 5 Days a Week, Duncan Always by His Side

On March 12 Beijing time, former Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich remains on his path to recovery following a stroke, but he is not solitary. Tim Duncan has consistently stayed with him.

Spurs CEO RC Buford recently guest on the French show "FirstTeam," talking about Popovich's recovery and Duncan's daily companionship. "One of the most touching aspects of Pop's rehabilitation is that Tim is at the gym with him every day," Buford said. "When Ginobili, Parker, or Diaw return from elsewhere, they also stay by his side. Seeing the love and respect between them is truly incredible."

Buford stated: "In my view, this reflects a unique relationship and emotional bond within our team. Because I don't believe many teams can achieve something like this."

The bond between Pop and Duncan is extremely deep. Beyond winning five NBA championships together, former coach Popovich has always appreciated Duncan's leadership and contributions, which made the Spurs a powerhouse in the league. Their relationship is akin to father and son.

This duo also created the most successful coach-player partnership in NBA history, leading the Spurs to five championships over 19 years.

Additionally, during Popovich's first public appearance after his stroke, Duncan and Ginobili were beside him, assisting him onto the stage and formally handing over the coaching reins to Mitch Johnson.

Regarding Pop's condition, Buford said he is recovering well, with significant progress in his rehabilitation. "He is extremely disciplined, one of the most disciplined people I've ever seen. He comes to the gym five days a week, persistently doing rehab training, and his condition keeps improving."

Popovich announced his retirement after a stroke in November 2024, ending a 29-year coaching career, and transitioned to the role of Spurs Basketball Operations President.
