On April 8, The Athletic reported on the changes Harden brought to the Cavaliers and exposed the star's only request to his new team. The related content is as follows—

After joining the Cavaliers via a major trade in February, James Harden made only one request. That was to conduct tactical walkthroughs in hotel banquet halls on away game days without shootaround sessions.
Several young teammates had never done this before, and even some veterans only occasionally tried it; it was almost unprecedented within the Cavaliers.
When Cavaliers head coach Atkinson first heard Harden's proposal, he squinted and shook his head. "I thought, uh, this isn't my style," Atkinson recalled his initial reaction. Many NBA teams outright reject such practices. But for Harden with the Clippers, such arrangements were routine.
Harden, 36, with his iconic beard and sharp, determined eyes, resolved to use his star influence to push for this, preserving a familiar preparation method in his new team.
“This is preparation, focusing on details, getting ready for the game,” Harden explained to The Athletic. “Physically warming up, mentally getting into the zone. Brother, this is preparation, especially as we approach this critical stretch. The key is understanding who the opponent is, the habits and preferences of the matchup. It gives us an edge, hopefully we play better.”
The Cavaliers acquired Harden from the Clippers in exchange for Garland, one of the biggest moves of the trade deadline. Since Harden's arrival, the Cavaliers started with a 5-game winning streak, and the team's record with him playing is 18-6. Since Harden's debut on February 8, the Cavaliers' offensive efficiency ranks first in the league.
Harden is one of the league's premier organizers, especially adept at isolation offense, a weapon he has mastered throughout most of his career. However, Atkinson's Cavaliers system is not isolation-heavy, emphasizing passing and cuts instead. Thus, when asked recently about integrating Harden, Atkinson noted the team made minimal adjustments to accommodate him. The head coach stated the banquet hall walkthrough was the only change Harden requested. “He has fully integrated into our style of play, honestly, it's quite remarkable,” Atkinson said.
Harden, an 11-time All-Star, performed excellently with the Clippers this season but was unfortunately not selected for the All-Star Game. He has never missed the playoffs in his career, and last week the Cavaliers defeated the Warriors to secure a playoff spot, extending this streak.

“I was initially a bit skeptical, thinking watching film was enough,” Atkinson said regarding Harden's banquet hall proposal. “But we tried it once, went through the whole process. Constant communication, explaining defensive setups, and I thought, hey, this seems useful.”
What exactly is a hotel banquet hall tactical walkthrough?
Most NBA teams schedule at least a “shootaround” on game days, a light on-court session usually held at the away arena, where coaches review opponent tendencies and set tactics, ending with shooting practice.
But such sessions are often canceled for various reasons: back-to-back second games, tight travel schedules, or if a full team practice occurred the previous day. Previously, Atkinson's Cavaliers typically prepared only through individual and team film sessions in such cases.
Harden joined the Cavaliers after requesting a trade from the Clippers, and with the Clippers, head coach Tyronn Lue frequently used banquet hall walkthroughs instead of shootarounds on away games. (Lue did this when coaching the Cavaliers previously.)

The coaching staff uses athletic tape to mark court boundaries (paint, three-point line, etc.) on the banquet hall floor. Players come down in slippers or sandals and walk through tactical positioning and opponent responses step-by-step.
“Football teams do this daily,” Atkinson said. “There are definitely coaches in the league who do this. Teams I've been with sometimes did, sometimes didn't. I hadn't tried it myself before, only used it in playoffs. We've done three with Harden already, and I really like it. Because even in slippers, they have to articulate defensive thinking clearly.”
Cavaliers star Mitchell stated that when he played for the Jazz, head coach Snyder also arranged banquet hall walkthroughs. He called it a “more traditional, old-school” method, engraving tactics into muscle memory, greatly aiding the night's game.
“No need for full-speed runs, even in socks,” Mitchell said. “Getting the positioning down in the morning, so the brain remembers during the night game. Every coach has a different style, but Harden brought this, and I think it's great.”
The Cavaliers have indeed changed since Harden arrived

Atkinson often says the current Cavaliers are a “better team.” Harden wasn't the only acquisition during the trade period (Schröder and Ellis also joined from the Kings), but the team clearly views Harden's size, experience, and basketball IQ as a significant upgrade.
Mitchell indicated the Cavaliers' offense made minor adjustments to leverage Harden's isolation strengths, but Harden himself integrated well into the existing system. He said playing alongside Harden feels “very reassuring,” and former Jazz head coach Will Hardy even described the Harden-Mitchell backcourt duo as “a nightmare for opponents.”
“We won't completely overhaul the system,” Mitchell said. “This also showcases Harden's capability. We made adjustments too; when the trade happened, we knew we had to adapt. And you can see, he plays so effortlessly. So the team's changes are more about maintaining positioning, reducing unnecessary movement. When I lead the second unit, we push the pace.”
Harden himself stated he feels “very comfortable” with the Cavaliers, both in the tactical system and with new teammates, evidently including the team's current training habits.
“This is why listening to players' ideas matters,” Atkinson remarked again about the walkthroughs. “Initially I wasn't keen. Let's see if I still like it after two months.”
Just some tape on a hotel floor, a group of players in slippers. For a superstar, it's a remarkably modest request.
