On April 22 Beijing time, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was unanimously elected the Defensive Player of the Year, and NASA also posted a message praising and teasing him. Under the news of Wembanyama's award, NASA joked: "Whether on Earth or traveling through the universe, Wembanyama's defense is everywhere."

This official U.S. space agency last year posted a photo on social media with the following caption—

From the basketball court to the vast cosmos, Wembanyama excels in everything.
NBA star Victor Wembanyama visited NASA's Johnson Space Center, touring the spacecraft simulator workshop and mission control center, and even personally experienced riding a lunar rover.
Whether dominating the interior on the court or immersed in aerospace equipment, Wembanyama, hailed as an "alien" due to his extraordinary talent, fits perfectly within the atmosphere of space technology.
He also left his signature on a hatch door like a genuine space VIP. Without any simulation drills, the ambiance was instantly elevated, with an impeccable aura.

As NASA's post mentioned, Wembanyama has long been following NASA's space projects. Last August, he visited NASA's research center in Houston; earlier this month, he also sent messages to the astronauts of the Artemis II lunar orbit mission.
During a NASA live stream, he said: "Hello everyone, I'm Victor Wembanyama, an NBA basketball player. But my interests aren't limited to basketball; I'm also passionate about meteors, dark matter, and various astronomical phenomena."
Wembanyama, who just turned 22 in January, became the youngest Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history. This season, he led the league with an average of 3.1 blocks per game, surpassing Chet Holmgren of the Thunder and Ausar Thompson of the Pistons to win the award. Additionally, he averaged 1 steal per game, helping the Spurs finish the regular season with the third-best defensive efficiency in the league.
With an extraordinary wingspan approaching 2.44 meters, the Spurs now hope Wembanyama can lead the team past the Trail Blazers and advance to the second round of the 2026 playoffs. In his playoff debut, Wembanyama scored 35 points, setting a Spurs franchise record for points in a first playoff game. Next, he aims to lead the team to a 2-0 series advantage.
