Rajon Rondo is poised to become the head coach of the Pelicans! He has already interviewed for the position and will compete with candidates like Ham and Borrego.

On April 27 Beijing time, NBA reporter Marc Stein reported that the New Orleans Pelicans are seriously considering hiring NBA guard Rajon Rondo as the team's head coach, with Rondo being one of the potential candidates for the role.

Stein stated: "League sources indicate that Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney and former All-Star guard Rajon Rondo have both entered the selection list for the Pelicans' head coach position."

The Pelicans finished the 2025-26 regular season with a record of 26 wins and 56 losses. After head coach Willie Green was dismissed, James Borrego served as interim head coach for most of the season.

Stein added that Rondo taking over as the Pelicans' head coach is highly feasible. He wrote: "League sources confirm that Rondo has interviewed for the position. Previously, he served as a special assistant coach to Doc Rivers with the Bucks. During his time with the Celtics, after suffering an ACL tear and during his recovery, he first developed an interest in coaching, which led Brad Stevens to invite him to participate in team coaching meetings."

It is evident that the Pelicans' search for a head coach is quite extensive. The team has struggled with poor performance for years, and fans are eager for the team to improve its competitiveness.

Stein revealed that interim coach Borrego also has the potential to be retained permanently. Other candidates include Bucks head coach Darvin Ham and Nets assistant coach Steve Hertz.

Throughout his lengthy career, Rondo briefly played for the Pelicans for one season and won two NBA championships during his playing career.
